                     NATURIST ACTION COMMITTEE

DATE   : March 5, 2003
SUBJECT: Oregon Senate Joint Resolution 33
TO     : All naturists

Dear Naturist,

The Naturist Action Committee is closely monitoring the 2003 U.S. state legislatures on behalf of naturists. We have recently identified a threatening situation in Oregon. NAC wishes to make you aware of it, to let you know what NAC is doing, and to ask that you be prepared to help.

This past Friday, Sen. Bruce Starr (R-Aloha) and Sen. Charles Starr (R-Hillsboro) introduced Senate Joint Resolution 33, a measure that directly affects naturists.

Sponsors in the Oregon House of Representatives will include Rep. Betsy Close (R-Albany), Rep. Linda Flores (R-Clackamas and Multnomah counties) and Rep. Mary Gallegos (R-Cornelius).

SJR 33 proposes an amendment to Oregon's Constitution to authorize laws limiting or prohibiting persons younger than 21 years of age from viewing what its legislative sponsors call (as if it were an indivisible term) "nudity and sexual activity." The bill also authorizes the creation of a definition for "nudity and sexual activity" for the purpose of enforcing the prospective prohibition.

If passed, SJR 33 would place the question of the constitutional amendment on a statewide ballot for approval or rejection by the state's voters. Such a vote could pave the way for laws that would end family-friendly naturism in the state of Oregon.

The Naturist Action Committee has joined with the American Association for Nude Recreation and the Northwest Nudist Association to hire a legislative lobbyist to assist naturists and nudists in assuring the defeat of this dangerous measure.

The measure has not yet been assigned to a legislative committee, but NAC is monitoring it closely.

This is a NAC Advisory. It is not a call for action at this time. NAC wishes naturists - especially Oregon naturists - to be aware of the situation and be ready to respond when the time is right. Look for NAC Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on this topic.

Additional information about Senate Joint Resolution 33 is available on the web site of the Naturist Action Committee:

The Naturist Action Committee exists to advance and protect the rights of naturists throughout North America. NAC is a volunteer nonprofit organization that relies on the grass roots participation of naturists who understand that individuals working together can make a difference.

NAC has no membership roster on which to assess dues, and it relies completely on voluntary contributions from concerned and involved naturists like you. Monitoring lawmakers across North America is expensive, but NAC knows that it's necessary for the protection of our freedoms.
