DATE: January 21, 2014
SUBJECT: Petition to whitehouse.gov
TO: All naturists and other interested parties

Greetings.

This is an Advisory from the Naturist Action Committee (NAC). An ongoing program of the Obama administration allows the creation and "signing" of online petitions to suggest an official action, position or policy. To quote the White House explanation, "If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it's sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response."

Through questions and comments from naturists, NAC became aware a week or so ago of an online petition effort that makes suggestions naturists have found to be interesting.

Information concerning the petition, including its complete text and how to sign it if you wish, may be found online:

WAS NAC INVOLVED WITH THE CREATION OF THE PETITION?
NAC was not involved. The originator of the petition is Larry Darter of Ardmore, Oklahoma. Mr. Darter has observed, after the fact, that "NAC seems a natural partner for an initiative such as this," but he did not choose to involve NAC or AANR in the creation of the petition, saying that "neither TNS nor AANR was informed or solicited for support before the launch of the petition to deflect unwarranted criticism from them."

THE PETITION ITSELF
Using wording and phrasing that will be familiar to most naturists, the petition seeks to "[d]esignate portions of wilderness public lands under management of the National Parks Service, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service for clothing-optional recreational use."

One could perhaps observe that "wilderness" lands may not be the most reasonable initial target for clothing-optional recreational use, but that's likely to be one of those "unwarranted criticisms" that the petition's originator sought to deflect by excluding those who deal with this sort of thing regularly. On the whole, the petition is well written. Along with its supporting text, it makes use of standard available tools, like the various opinion surveys commissioned by the Naturist Education Foundation.

It is probably less important to assess the petition's chance of reaching a goal of 100,000 signatures than it is to recognize the value of the dialog it has created.

SIGN IT?
This is a NAC Advisory, not a NAC Action Alert. The Naturist Action Committee is not asking you to take specific action on this matter. However, if you've familiarized yourself with the petition, you may wish to sign it.

NAC encourages responsible grass roots activity on behalf of naturist interests, whether or not it originates with NAC.

PLEASE ASSURE THAT NAC CAN CONTINUE HELPING NATURISTS!

Yes, NAC is going to ask for donations. Even though the Naturist Action Committee did not originate the petition that's the subject of this Advisory, NAC is leading numerous other ongoing and meaningful efforts on behalf of naturists, and many of those efforts are quite costly. To be effective, we simply cannot be embarrassed or reluctant to ask for your help when we have the opportunity.

Perhaps the only real risk from signing the petition is the chance that you'll come away with the notion that simply signing it is enough, and that the need for your personal participation and financial support has been satisfied.

NAC relies entirely on the voluntary financial support of people like YOU. Won't you please send a generous donation to NAC at the following address:
