DATE   : January 20, 2004
SUBJECT: Virginia legislation
TO     : All naturists

Dear Naturist,

A subcommittee of the Virginia House of Delegates has scheduled a public hearing on House Bill 158, a bill that would forbid nude youth camps of the type operated by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).

Testimony will be taken by Subcommittee #3 (Alcoholic Beverage Control & Gaming Subcommittee) of the House Committee on General Laws. The hearing is scheduled to convene at 5:00 PM this coming Thursday, January 22, 2004. The location for the hearing is the 4th Floor Hearing Room of the General Assembly Building at the State Capitol complex in Richmond.

WHAT IS NAC DOING?

The Naturist Action Committee and naturists will be represented at the subcommittee hearing by Jonathan Shopiro, the NAC board member responsible for Virginia.

WHAT SHOULD I BE DOING?

This is an Advisory. The Naturist Action Committee is not asking you to take specific action at this time. You are of course welcome and encouraged to attend the hearing on Thursday. You may certainly speak there if you wish, but there should already be an adequate number of speakers representing naturists and nudists, since in addition to NAC, AANR and AANR East will also be sending representatives.

NAC is still requesting that you DO NOT CONTACT VIRGINIA LAWMAKERS ON THIS ISSUE AT THE PRESENT TIME. The upcoming hearing on Thursday is an exercise at the subcommittee level. It's important, but it's just an early round in a fight that may last much longer. NAC has determined that it will be more appropriate to save the strength of an all out grass roots response for use at a later time if this bill manages to advance to a higher level.

Please continue to watch for NAC Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on this and other important issues.

MORE INFORMATION

HB 158 is one of two dozen bills currently assigned to Subcommittee #3 of the House Committee on General Laws. There is presently no word on how many other bills may be considered during the same hearing session on Thursday.
