DATE   : October 24, 2001

SUBJECT: Virgin Islands National Park

TO     : All naturists

Confirmed reports from Virgin Islands National Park indicate that Park Service rangers are ticketing beachgoers for nudity at Solomon Beach, a traditional clothing-optional area. This escalation follows a period of time during which rangers have dogged naturists without issuing citations.

The shift in policy away from a long-standing tradition of tolerance for skinny-dipping and nude sunbathing at the site was first characterized as a move to limit drug traffic. Now it is ostensibly a campaign to make the beach safer for families with children. However, NAC is aware of possible ulterior motives, which include consideration of the Solomon Beach area as a destination for shuttles operating from cruise ships that local businesses hope to lure to anchor in Solomon Bay.

The Naturist Action Committee recognizes that as cooler months approach, many naturists will begin considering vacations to the US Virgin Islands in general and Virgin Islands National Park (VINP) in particular. In light of the park's aggressive new anti-nudity policy, NAC cannot presently recommend VINP as the stress-free naturist destination it once was.

NAC's efforts to negotiate with the management of Virgin Islands National Park on this matter have not been successful to this point, and we are now asking for your help.

NAC NEEDS YOUR HELP!

If your vacation plans have been disrupted by this news, NAC asks that you immediately contact the Tourism Department of the US Virgin Islands. The economy of the Islands is influenced greatly by the tourist trade. Express your alarm, and be specific about the amount of money you generally spend during your stay.

Even if you've never been and have only considered visiting the Virgin Islands, NAC asks that you write to the Tourism Department. In either case, be sure to send a copy of your letter to the superintendent of the national park.

  St. Thomas, VI 00804

  Mr. John King, Superintendent
  Virgin Islands National Park
  P.O. Box 710
  St. John, VI 00831

Please make your letters concise and polite. NAC will be following up with further discussions with USVI and Park Service officials, and we need your letters to establish the terrible negative effect of the anti-nudity campaign at VINP.

The Naturist Action Committee is the volunteer political arm of The Naturist Society. NAC's mission is to advance and protect the rights of naturists throughout North America. Since NAC has no membership roster on which to assess dues, it relies on voluntary contributions from concerned naturists.
