                       NATURIST ACTION COMMITTEE

DATE : June 17, 2004
SUBJECT: Ashland, Oregon
TO : All naturists

Dear Naturist,

With only one dissenting vote, the city council of Ashland, Oregon, has passed a modified version of the anti-nudity ordinance the city's police chief had requested. The measure was amended from its original form so that the ban on exposure of genitals applies only to those who are on public property in the downtown commercial zone or in a public park.

In a NAC Action Alert distributed on May 29, and in a NAC Update on June 3, the Naturist Action Committee asked Oregon residents to contact members of the Ashland City Council. NAC expresses its sincere appreciation to those who responded.

NAC worked carefully on this matter with local citizens. The Ashland newspaper presented NAC's point of view in a favorable light. In the end, however, NAC was unable to ignite sufficient local action, and others who opposed the ordinance were too sparse and too fragmented. The resulting ordinance is mild by almost any comparison, but NAC was aiming to defeat it altogether. This outcome has to be counted as a loss.

We must learn from this shortfall while refining and intensifying our efforts.

The Naturist Action Committee continues to monitor and act on matters of significance to naturists. Please watch for NAC Action Alerts, Advisories and Updates on important issues.
